Why I am choosing to run for Parkinson’s UK at the London Marathon
I was very fortunate to get a place for the London Marathon through my running club’s ballot. I generally have a rule that I do not raise money with my running as it puts you under pressure to run the event even if you are not really fit to do so. This year however is different and mainly because my good friend David Pritchard, who was the finance manager at Kaleidoscope for six years, and a friend ever since was diagnosed with Parkinson’s.
I have known a number of people who have suffered from the disease. Shiraz was a fellow Councillor in Kingston with me who got diagnosed with the disease. He is an extraordinary person who showed that you can live with the illness becoming the first Asian Mayor of Kingston and setting up community centres in Parkistan as well as the Borough. The disease had an impact on him, but it did not define him. As I have become aware of the condition I have been aware of a staff member, a runner from a local club and a friend from Plaid are both affected by this disease.
Recently I met up with David to talk about Parkinson’s and he was willing to share his experience with me. One of the critical issues for David was the diagnosis, which took a year and in reality was due to his daughter going to google looking up her father’s symptoms and then sending David to a Private Consultant. The GPs he went to see simply did not pick up on the condition and medicated for various ailments they thought he had such as anxiety. So during the year David was suffering from all the symptoms of Parkinson’s but getting no help to deal with them.
I hope that in running for Parkinson’s UK I can raise awareness and try and ensure those needing the help get it as soon as possible. I also hope that by raising funds a cure can be found.
As with many people I know they will not let the disease rule their lives but they have to adapt to ensure they can remain strong.
