Drug Services - Newport

Newport Drug Services

A city service for city people

The Newport service represents an accomplished example of a seamless service that offers a “one stop shop” approach to substance misuse. Kaleidoscope in Newport is commissioned to provide both community prescribing and open access services. This places Kaleidoscope in the unique position within Gwent of being able to provide a seamless, fully integrated service that addresses people's medical, social and psychosocial needs.  All these services are delivered under one roof in a building that has been designed especially for the Newport service and is easily accessible to all Newport residents. The one stop shop approach means that a client can pick up their medication, have a Hep B vaccination, sign up for future diversionary activities, such as boxing or swimming, receive housing and employment advice and attend a support group all under one roof. Alternatively they can just drop in for a cuppa and a chat within our welcoming café. In order to ensure that we can offer a service to all members of our community, we also offer extensive assertive outreach services.

Drug Services

The In-house services available at the project are as follows:

Medical Services

Medication Prescribing

Kaleidoscope offers prescribing to support clients through all stages of addressing an opiate dependency.  This includes prescribing for maintenance, detox and relapse prevention.

Doctor support

Clients at Kaleidoscope Newport are able to have a consultation with an onsite doctor in any one of five clinics per week. Clinics are not only held on weekdays but also in the evening and at the weekend to ensure equality of access.

Nursing Team

We have an experienced onsite nursing team. A member of this team is available throughout the project opening times. The nursing team offers medical assessment, health checks, wound care, mental health support, vaccinations, training, health promotion and dietary advice.

Naloxone

Naloxone is an opioid antagonist, which temporarily reverses the effects of drugs such as heroin and methadone. When administered to someone who has overdosed on opiates, the overdose is reversed for long enough for medical assistance to arrive. Kaleidoscope has implemented a Naloxone initiative in Newport, as part of a multi-agency initiative covering the City.  This is a Welsh Assembly Government sponsored initiative, with Newport being one of four initial demonstration sites for the implementation of Naloxone supply across Wales.

Naloxone is supplied to clients who have attended a one to two-hour training programme.

Case Management

The Newport Project Work Team provide assessment, care planning, advice, support and onward referral. They offer one-to-one support based on a comprehensive assessment and a jointly agreed action plan.  We work to a client’s own goals at their pace. All project workers have received training in motivational techniques and theories of substance misuse.

Therapeutic Group Work Programme

Newport Kaleidoscope provides a full programme of support and treatment groups. These are held throughout the week at the Newport project. Groups that are held include: foundation, relapse prevention, moving forward and Women’s group.

Diversionary Activities

Full programmes of Diversionary Activities are available. This includes swimming, gym, gardening, boxing and paint balling.

Service User Involvement

Kaleidoscope Newport is committed to meaningful and purposeful service user involvement.  This includes a four-day training course for service users who wish to volunteer within the project, forums, representation on interview panels and at board meetings and a 'service users newsletter'.

Outreach Services

Stimulant Support Service
