Education and Training - Kingston Placements For Socila Work Students

Kingston Placements for Social Work Students

The social work unit offers placements to student social workers completing a degree or masters in social work. We offer shadowing placements of 1 day, short practice placements of 20 days or longer placements of 70 or 100 days.

Education and Training
Students are based with the Project Team and are supported by a Work Based Supervisor (WBS) from Kaleidoscope or Alfriston Day Centre - they offer 'hands on' support regarding service user work. The WBS is responsible for allocating casework in agreement with the practice educator, who advises of students specific learning needs, to ensure they fulfil the requirements of the GSCC in order to qualify. The practice educator meets with students for 1:1 supervision on a fortnightly basis and group supervision on a monthly basis.

While on placement, students are expected to undertake assessments and offer care management to service users. Students may work with between three to five service users only, at any given point and are not on placement to work with a full caseload, as they require time to reflect on their practice. They may be based with the Volunteer Unit, Outreach Team, Project Management Team, Nursing Team, Dual Diagnosis Social Worker or Alfriston Day Centre. In some instances students may be working with services users to overlap a number of teams therefore it is essential to work cooperatively within this multi-disciplinary team.

The Key roles of student social workers are as follows:

Key Role 1- Prepare for and work with individuals, families, carers, groups and communities to assess their needs and circumstances.

Key Role 2 - Plan, carry out, review and evaluate social work practice, with individuals, families, cares, groups, communities and other professions.

Key Role 3 - Support individuals to represent their needs, views and circumstances.

Key Role 4 - Manage risk with individuals, families, carers, groups, communities, self and colleagues.

Key Role 5 - Manage and be accountable, with supervision and support, for your own social work practice within your organisation.

Key Role 6 - Demonstrate professional competence in social work practice.
