Our Trustee Board has responsibility for the governance and strategic direction of Kaleidoscope – ensuring that we uphold our ethos and purpose and delivers our objectives. Our board meets a minimum of 4 times per year.

Dr. Danny Antebi

(Board Chair)

Danny was instrumental in setting up Aneurin Bevan Continuous Improvement which is a health improvement centre offering leadership, support, training in improvement methodologies and project design and support. It’s collaboration with the Department of Mathematics at Cardiff University which can offer system modelling has won several awards.

Previously Danny was a psychiatrist for 30 years with about half that time in medical management and he worked on several large change projects in mental health. Danny says “I believe an understanding of the psychology of organisations and individuals and engaging what motivates health and social care professionals is hugely beneficial when trying to transform large complex organisations and systems.

Chris Freegard

Chris has been involved with Kaleidoscope ever since we arrived in Wales. As Managing Director of Newport City Council and Chair of the Community Safety Partnership he was concerned as to the range and quality of substance misuse services then available in the city. This led to the invitation to Kaleidoscope to work initially in Newport and provide some of the high quality services clients deserve.

Following retirement in 2009 Chris joined the Board and became Chair in 2011. Because of the benefits that our services bring to vulnerable people and communities, Kaleidoscope is an important commitment for Chris which brings him a great deal of personal satisfaction.

He is also Chair of Audit for a university, a Governor of an FE college a former Chair of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Gwent.

Julian Knight

Prior to his retirement, Julian was Chief Superintendent at Gwent Police and Head of Neighbourhood and Partnerships responsible for all territorial policing across the five unitary authorities of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen.

Appointed Police Commander of the Celtic Manor Resort during the NATO Summit in 2014 and involved in the policing of the European Summit in 2005 and the Ryder Cup in 2010.

Julian was the Chair of the Gwent Area Planning Board for Substance Misuse for 5 years and led the commissioning of the largest single service contract ever awarded in Wales in May 2015 for an integrated Adult Drugs and Alcohol Treatment Service. For the last two years of service he was the strategic lead for Mental Health in Gwent Police highlighting the growing significance of this area both internally among staff and its impact on the delivery of policing services to the local community.

As well as a recently joining the Board of Trustees of the Kaleidoscope, Julian is Chair of Governors for Crindau Primary School and a Community Governor at Bassaleg Comprehensive School. He is also the Chair of the City of Newport Swimming and Waterpolo Club. In his limited spare time he walks the fairways of local golf clubs proving Mark Twain was wrong.

Stephen Davison

“Stephen has been a Board Member of Kaleidoscope for four years joining after a managerial career in local government which saw many challenges including responsibilities for Community safety, and Environmental Health.

During his career he became involved with substance misuse and saw first-hand how addiction damages communities and individuals. The opportunity to put something back into an organisation with a committed workforce who have a first class record in improving lives is a source of great pride for him, and he looks forward to helping Kaleidoscope meet the challenges of the future.”

Frances Rutter

I have a longstanding interest in how society manages people who do not conform to societal norms or live in a way that many of us do not understand. I am a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and this is reflected in my beliefs and values. Before retiring, I worked for the Probation Service, for over 20 years, latterly as the Assistant Chief Probation Officer for the then Dyfed Powys Probation Service. I also have experience of working within the voluntary sector with families with young children, travellers and homeless families and the Health Service.

Since retiring, I have learnt to weave and have two looms which I use to make things for my family and friends. I enjoy walking, volunteer at HMP Cardiff as a Quaker Chaplain and am a member of a Quaker Sub-Group on Crime, Community and Justice. The Crime, Community and Justice Sub-group aims to inform Quakers about the criminal justice system and to influence policy and practice.

I am pleased and feel privileged to be able to contribute, in a small way, to Kaleidoscope. An organisation which has values I share and who I believe tries makes a positive contribution to supporting people, who much of society do not understand, and often live on the edge.

Catherine Pepinster

(Editor of the Tablet)

Catherine is a well-known contributor to Radio 4s ‘Thought for the Day’ and has had a distinguished career in journalism including her work with the Independent, before becoming the Editor of the Tablet. Catherine was the Catholic’s first female editor and stayed in that role until the end of 2016. Catherine is the author of the forthcoming ‘The Keys and The Kingdom: The British and the Papacy’ due out later this year. Catherine has had a long link with Kaleidoscope, where she was a volunteer in our hostel some years ago.

Carol Dicken

(Senior Lecturer – School of Social Work, Kingston University )

She has previously taught on sociology and addictive behaviour, and delivered training to professionals in drug use and parenting issues. She has undertaken research in child protection issues for drugs agency workers, on working with parents who use drugs, and on the practice placement experience of employment-based route students.

Tony Ormond

Tony, by his own acknowledgement, has limited qualifications that meet the criteria for many roles but makes up for this with his lived experience. Having spent 22 years in active drug addiction, Tony’s main asset is his ability to draw from the challenges he’s overcome to assist others to break free from ‘dark places’ and become better people. Tony is inspired by people who have a desire for change and wish to make a difference in their community. Previously Tony has developed and delivered a therapeutic programme in a 23 bed 12-step rehab and has a zest for social justice. He has worked in the Health &Social Care sector for over eight years, and in that time has cultivated a culture of co-production in the North Wales area. Benefits from his work include gaining exclusive insight into the gaps and deficits of the Wrexham service provision structure. Tony possesses the ideas to create a more vibrant solution focussed community. Tony is an ambassador for change and has co-produced transformative work throughout Wales, and delivered a Wales wide Mutual Aid roadshow which was commissioned by the Government. Tony is driven by his core beliefs, that any person suffering from a Substance Misuse Disorder can transform their lives and find a new way to live. No one is exempt from recovery and Tony found out first hand that addiction is the only prison in which the keys are located on the inside. Tony currently works in a 32 bed residential Rehab and feels blessed each day to give back in some way.

Tony explained that being accepted onto the Board at Kaleidoscope is one of the biggest honours of his life, and he aims to stitch in service user experience and perspective into all decisions.

Tony’s most significant achievement was when he won the Police and Crime Commissioners ‘Personal Endeavour’ award for Recovery in North Wales – Tony was nominated for this award by the assistant chief constable for North Wales Police.

Lynda Astell

Vice Principal (Resources & Planning) at Coleg Gwent

Lynda Astell is currently Vice Principal (Resources & Planning) at Coleg Gwent – one of the highest performing and largest Colleges in Wales. As one of three members of the College’s Corporate Management team, Lynda has responsibility for Finance and Payroll, Procurement, Estates and facilities, Health and safety, ICT, Human Resources and Community Learning and Bilingualism.

As an effective change manager, Lynda has successfully led a number of change programmes aimed at delivering the financial efficiencies required to address significant cuts in Government funding.

Lynda is also a member of the Audit Committee at Colegau Cymru, the representative body for further education in Wales and a Vice Chair of the Welsh Further Education Sector Finance Directors Network.

As a member of our Board, Lynda’s skills and experience of placing learners at the heart of decision making are wholly in line with Kaleidoscope’s strategic goals for our service users.

Ellie Okereke

Associate at Pinsent Masons LLP

Ellie Okereke is an Associate at Pinsent Masons LLP and acts for clients within the public, private and voluntary sectors providing law advice. She also specialises in broad and complex case management, providing strategic advice to Management and Board members.

Ellie advises and represents clients on all aspects of employment law including defending tribunal claims, drafting terms and conditions and policies, providing support during change management exercises, and providing strategic advice in relation to discrimination, dismissals, complex grievances and TUPE.

Ellie has particular expertise in advising on whistle-blowing claims and issues that organisations can face when managing employees in a highly regulated environment. In addition, Ellie has expertise in defending complex tribunal claims and managing reputational and security risks.

She also enjoys providing training sessions on a wide range of employment law topics to clients.

Kaleidoscope’s focus on valuing its employees is of particular interest to Ellie and believes that her skill set and passion will benefit our organisation and service users.
